You must have already heard by now that Carla Bruni has said in an interview with Parisian Vogue that women of her age don´t need feminism (she´s too bourgeois for that) , that is something outdated and that a woman´s place is at home. I´m not very keen on commenting interviews that I haven´t read by myself but I´m going to make an exception though. The thing is that Ms. Bruni´s controversial opinions has pushed me to start sooner than I intended a new section that could be called "Breaking Myths about Feminism"- as Sadie proposes - or "Feminism explained to jerks" - but Bianca says that it sounds a bit rude and she may be right. We do really appreciate your opinio and suggestions!
"WITH CARLA BRUNI AROUND? YES, WE NEED FEMINISM". by Bryony Gordon, The Telegraph
MYTH Nº 1 "FEMINISM IS AS BAD AS PATRIARCHY" OR "FEMINISM IS THE FEMININE EQUIVALENT OF PATRIARCHALISM" Excuse meee!! Patriarchy is discrimination, it stands for male superiority towards the female. Feminism is not about women´s superiority, it´s simply an ethical movement that claims the same rights and opportunities for everyone. Patriarchy hurts everyone as men are told they don´t have to cry, show their emotions, what not to wear, etc.
When you live in an ivory tower you need neither feminism nor other -isms. However the rest of us mortals that live in the real and cruel world, must keep on fighting for our rights. I was appalled to read in the latest issue of Marie Claire France the following question addressed to a group of young girls: "Can you still wear skirts in your area?" as in some areas of the main French town are criticised, harassed and insulted for wearing a skirt. Still so you think we don´t need feminism, Carla?
¡Ay, Carlita, y pensar que me caías bien!
