PRENDAS TONTAS - SILLY GARMENTS
These things that you don´t even know why you bought them; impractical clothes; garments that you thought you would never wear; gifts from well-meaning people that didn´t know you too well; clothes that we don´t know why we still keep in our wardrobes.
Top de terciopelo estampado pitón de cuello alto y manga corta.
Marca: Prima
High neck short sleeve snake print velvet top.
Brand: Prima
Country: UK
Year: Mid or late 90´s - That might be light vintage.
How it ended up in my wardrobe: My friend Debbie (the brunette), expert in bargain hunting at charity shops, outlets and street markets came to the office with this gift. "I bought myself an identical one. We´ll look like twins" Sure, apart from 16 years of age and 20cm of height difference between us, Debbie and I were similar... in eccentricities.
How many times I have worn it: From the all silly garments I have this one is the less silly because I remember wearing it quite a few times but I always regret my choice since it´s either too warm or cold for the season.
Long sleeve backless shirt with a sequined embroidered bird on the front.
Brand: Unknown
Country: Italy
Year: 2008/2009
How it ended up in my wardrobe: Because it was cheap and it had a cute animal, as simple as that. The funniest thing is that I have never liked backless garments. However I decided to wear it... with a bra and jacket, spoiling the charm of the shirt.
How many times I have worn it: Twice, but there´s no two without three.
Trench con manga 3/4
Marca: Primark
País: Ve tu a saber
3/4 SleeveTrench
Brand: Primark
Country: Who knows
Year: 2009
How it ended up in my wardrobe: Every time I go to London I do something stupid. Can anyone tell me how practical is a 3/4 sleeve trench? Let alone if it´s a size bigger than mine and slightly bell shaped. A look (not) to kill for.
How many times I have worn it: Twice. There could be a third. If I ever happen to have a job interview for a nanny position in Kensington I´ll make sure to wear it.
¿y
¿Y vosotras/vosotros? ¿Qué "prendas tontas" guardáis en vuestros armarios?
And how about you? What "silly garments" do you keep in your wardrobe?

What (not) to write in your Twitter Bio

Highlights in Fashion History: Amelia Bloomer
Vituperated and ridiculised for attempting to reform the feminine Victorian wardrobe, American women´s rights advocate Amelia Jenks Bloomer became famous in history as the main character of a movement that in the mid-1850´s tried to liberate women from the tight-fitting corsets that caused health problems as well as the several layers of clothes, including pettycoats and dresses that impeded the movements of the body. On her magazine The Lily, Ms. Jenks wrote enthusiastically about a new outfit worn by some girls from her town. This consisted of a simplified version of the bodice in vogue and a loose and ample skirt which reached well below the knee. Baggy or Turkish trousers reaching to the ankle could be seen underneath. Although feminist writer Elizabeth Smith Miller was the first one to adopt this outfit, it was Amelia who popularised it and gave her name to it. Some women´s rights advocates such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B.Anthony or Lucy Stone came to believe that the style had become such a focus of ridicule that wearing it prevented women's concerns from being taken seriously, and they abandoned wearing bloomers by late 1853. Bloomer, however, continued to wear the outfit in daily life and on speaking tours until after her move to Iowa in 1855, behavior that exacerbated the friction between her and other women's rights leaders (Source: Jean Florman. The Biographical Dictionary of Iowa)
It is said that the Bloomer Movement was a complete failure but the truth is that 50 years later the pioneer women cyclists adopted bloomers (and so they were named as homage to Amelia )as an essential garment to ride. Amelia´s only "failure" was to be ahead of her time.
